I’ve been wrestling with this decision for quite some time now, but guess it’s the best thing to do.
I decided to sell the Mazda.
I had it inspected last week and it didn’t pass the smog test.
When I bought it 2 years back, it passed with a missing cat (don’t ask me how, I really don’t know).
I didn’t know it had no cat at the time. It was when I rebuild the engine that I noticed something was missing.
Now that the engine is rebuilt and ported, it apparently wont pass the test anymore. I don’t know if the tester wasn’t working the first time or if the worn out engine somehow produced less smog.
That, combined with the fact it needs a gearbox, and the fact I still haven’t repaired the dents and scratches that were in it when I bought it, pushed me to sell it.
Its parking space probably won’t stay open for long though.

My friend here at work has an RX-8, and he’s had no end of cat problems. But that car is super fun.

You’re in France? I’m surprised you need an emissions test at all because here (in Ireland) rotaries and two strokes are exempt and I thought the same standards were applied throughout the EU.
What happens here is that test stations often don’t know about the exemption and do the test anyway. An RX8 will almost always fail but will eventually get a pass certificate when the head office reviews the situation.

It’s alright to SL the rx-8, as long as you know what to replace it with and as long as it produces even more smiles per gallon. :)
My recommendation: C6 z06 corvette because after a rotary, you need a v8 monster. And it’s much cheaper on gas than the rx8. Other than that, I’d love to get myself a good Peugeot 205 GTI as a daily driver. I’ve always seen it as the ultimate daily driver so... :)

I just checked that. While the lambda can be off, the carbon monoxide can’t be off limits. But that’s one point less at least.

The only problem I can see with the C6 Z06 is that you can buy over 20 000 liters of petrol for the price difference between it and an RX-8.

Rotary is life, rotary is love :-)
There are so many candidates on what could replace it, and I’m quite impulsive. Right now, I’m thinking NSX, a friend of mine wants me to buy an old RX-7, which i really like too. A Ro80 with a renesis would be fun.
I think I’ll limit myself to 300 hp. Family (mom) isn’t so happy about my car buying habits, especially after my accident.
A GTI would be awesome, and is definitely on my list of cars to buy someday, but right now, I still have a psychological barrier to spending 5000€ on a car I could have bought for 500 five years ago. (I flipped 2 CTIs about 6 years ago, I bought them for under 500€ and sold them for under 1000€, i hate myself when I think about it)

Thanks, I might wait a bit with the purchase though, I need some room.

I have no way to disagree with that statement without hating myself...
